Safety and Security tips for visitors to the Cayman Islands

General Safety Suggestions

  • Keep your travel plans, including accommodation details, private.
  • Keep a photocopy of all your travel documents in a safe place.
  • Only carry what cash you will need for that day or trip.
  • Keep all purses, wallets and cell phones safely tucked away.
  • Avoid leaving purses, bags or knapsacks on chairs, under tables, on the backs of chairs or on restroom hooks.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at ATMs and cash points.
  • Should your passport be lost or stolen, report it immediately to the police and to your country’s diplomatic mission
  • Cancel lost or stolen credit cards and travellers cheques as soon as possible and report it to the police.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings.  Report any suspicious or unusual activities to the police or security personnel.
  • Carefully obey all local laws and customs.
  • Avoid over consumption of alcohol since it diminishes your natural awareness and alertness of who and what is around you.
  • During your stay, keep in touch with family and friends through international roaming service and/or email.
  • It is illegal to use, sell or have in your possession drugs such as marijuana, cocaine or any other controlled substance.
  • If you are approached by anyone trying to sell you drugs, firmly say NO and leave.

Beach and Water

  • Observe water conditions carefully and ask hotel or condo staff about safe bathing areas.
  • Avoid swimming outside the designated swimming markers.
  • When scuba diving be certain a dive flag is visibly present.
  • If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore and not against the pull of the current.
  • Do not dive into the surf as this may cause injury.
  • Scuba dive only if you are certified and stay within the limits of your training.
  • Do not float where you cannot swim and do not rely on flotation devices.
  • Watch small children closely.
  • Do not leave valuables unattended while swimming.

Health

  • If you have any allergies, enquire about the ingredients used to prepare the meal.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating.

Transport

  • Keep close watch over your luggage at all times and never leave it unattended.
  • Consult with destination services about the availability of transportation.  They can inform you of reputable transportation providers and services available.
  • Plan your route carefully.  Make sure you have a map where you can identify your destination, hotel, tourism offices, police stations and hospital.
  • Do not hitchhike and do not pick up hitchhikers.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle.  Remove them from the car when possible or keep them in the trunk.
  • Do not leave keys in the car unattended, even while running quick errands or filling up with gasoline.
  • Ensure your vehicle always contains at least a half tank of gasoline.
  • Drive on the left hand side of the road and heed traffic signs and speed limits (miles per hour).
  • If renting a vehicle, ask your provider about the procedure if an emergency should arise.

Accommodation

  • Consult with the destination office about approved and registered accommodation.  A listing can be sourced from Cayman’s Department of Tourism.
  • When checking in, do not leave your luggage unattended.
  • Keep your room door locked at all times.  Check sliding glass doors, windows and connecting room doors to ensure all locks are operable.
  • Do not invite strangers into your room.  Know your visitor’s identity prior to admittance.  If someone claims they are from maintenance, security or a hotel employee, phone the front desk to make sure the visitor is legitimate.
  • Keep all valuables in your hotel room safe or at the front desk safety deposit box and check them regularly.
  • Always keep your room keys in a secure place.
  • When returning to your room, make sure you have your room key close at hand.
  • Familiarize yourself with the hotel’s emergency plan.  Locate the fire exits, elevators and the nearest phone.
